All of us have stages in our life that are given high priority. Whether it’s college, marriage, or children, our focus is more narrowed than at other times and we find ourselves involved almost to the exclusion of everything else.

Marriage. Getting married is a huge decision, one that takes planning and preparation. Often, we forget about the emotional changes we’ll be making in favor of the wedding dress, or we are worried about sharing our new space, instead of just sitting down and talking about it. When it comes to getting married, the wedding might be the most beautiful thing this side of the Caribbean, but we can’t forget what living with our spouse actually means. Conversation is key.

College. When it comes to attending school, we soon realize the choice takes money and time. It isn’t easy to make the time to travel to your local college or university. It may not be possible to schedule your day around the classes offered, and you may find that the cost far outweighs the reward. For these reasons, you may decide on an online college experience at your university of choice.

Children. Having a baby takes money and maturity. It isn’t easy getting up in the middle of the night to nurse a sick child when you need the sleep. No one really knows how to take care of a child until they have one, but quick understanding comes if the parents are wise enough to listen to parents and friends who’ve already had children.

Life stages are important in any life, and it’s important to remember to give them the high priority they deserve.

The experience of new parents after having a first child is often a rough one. While these individuals love and adore their children, the adjustment to little or no sleep at night, increased noise levels, and constant messes may be difficult for some. Before the baby comes, there are a few tips to remember in order to make the process a bit easier.

The first tip is for parents to remember to take care of themselves. While a baby does demand a lot of attention and care, a sick parent is going to be little help to the child. Making sure to rotate shifts of care between both parents, so that the mother is able to get some sleep will be helpful. New moms may also find themselves grabbing snacks during feedings or while the baby is asleep, but good nutrition is crucial for nursing mothers.

Another smart idea is to accept assistance from friends and family members. Those who are skilled in baby care may offer guidance that new parents may not understand. New moms often feel very protective of their children and skills as a parent, but accepting help is not the same as admitting defeat. Taking time for personal hobbies and to spend with a spouse is also important to remain sane. New parents should remember that a little time apart from the child may be more beneficial in the long run, although it may be difficult to leave the baby initially.

Spending time together as a family is important. New parents are making the adjustment to infant care, and taking time to enjoy it is a great way to bond.

Breastfeeding is a beautiful act that helps to nourish your baby with what you created with your own body and helps to bring you and your baby closer together. However, there may come a time when breastfeeding isn’t practical. How do you decide when it’s the right time to switch to formula?

When your child becomes dependent on you and you have decided that the breastfeeding has become a crutch. If your baby reaches to breastfeed in an effort to be comforted – before he goes to sleep, when he wakes up or when he’s upset in any way, that’s an indication that your baby may be using breastfeeding not just for nourishment, but also for comfort.

Breastfeeding becomes an inconvenience that negatively affects your life. This inconvenience or negativity can take many forms, depending on each mother and child’s personal situation – from fatigue or illness or embarrassment or even time constraints. It’s also the reason to switch to formula feeding that seems to garner the most negative attention from mothers who feel guilt over putting themselves over the perceived health or happiness of your child. However, keep in mind that your child is going to have a hard time being happy if you’re not and it’s hard enough with a new baby without added stresses.

Your child has expressed interest in a bottle or cup. Some mommies want to extend the closeness they feel when they breastfeed their baby, so they ignore the signs that their child is ready to grow up. While you can certainly pump milk to provide, don’t be scared to make the switch to formula.

There comes a time in every parent’s life when his or her children grow up and move out on their own. This bittersweet experience is full of emotions. Parents have spent so many years raising their children and teaching them right from wrong that many parents want to help their children with this important and costly milestone. Of course, you need to be confident that your children are ready for their own place and the responsibilities of paying rent, HOA management fees, or a mortgage. The following tips will help you decide if your children are ready for their own place.

Financially Stable

The most important factor to consider, when thinking about your child’s readiness to move out, is his or her financial situation. Your child must be financially stable with a good job and steady income. Your child should also have a savings account, ideally with enough money to cover three months’ worth of living expenses for emergencies.

Mature, Responsible, and Independent

Your child must demonstrate that he or she is mature enough to move out. He or she must be responsible enough to pay the bills on time, especially utility bills and credit card bills. Also, your child must contact a reputable HOA management company to help them when starting the process. Independence also plays a role because children must be independent enough to handle living on their own. If an emergency arises, will your child know what to do, other than call you?

When your child shows all of these signs of readiness, it’s a good indication that he or she is ready to move out.

It’s a time-honored tradition: a father captures his baby’s first moments on film as the mother gives birth to a precious new life. Birthing videos often become cherished keepsakes, passed down for generations. Years later, the adult who was once that baby can literally watch their very first breath being taken. Birth is an amazing, awe-inspiring event, perhaps the most important time in a couple’s entire life.

For all of these reasons and more, it is upsetting news that many hospitals are now banning video cameras in birthing suites. Why? Because they create evidence available to present to a court should that birth involve malpractice. Hospitals are so worried that people will record them making careless mistakes at the cost of you and your baby that they are banning birthing video recordings.

Should the threat of increasing video camera bans in birthing suites keep you from using your own birthing video as evidence in court if you have captured medical malpractice on film? Absolutely not. You can’t put a price on the safety of your life, or your baby’s. Focus on your specific hospital and location when selecting a lawyer. If you live in Los Angeles, see what injury attorneys in los angeles have to offer.

Whether to ban birthing videos and other recording devices in the birthing suite or not is currently the choice of each individual hospital. Rather than trying to hide any mistakes that might be made, hospitals should be focusing on not making any mistakes — and until they pay attention, those who have suffered due to negligence can and should demand compensation for their carelessness with patients’ safety.

Deciding to undergo a homebirth is a big decision that should not be taken lightly. Although a quiet, private homebirth may sound appealing, both the pros and cons should be weighed before foregoing a hospital room.

There are a variety of reasons why homebirths can trump a traditional birth in a hospital. First, statistics have shown that homebirths are as safe if not safer than hospital births for low-risk women. Supporters argue that pregnancy and labor are natural body functions, and not an illness or disease that requires a visit to the hospital. At home, women can feel comfortable in familiar surroundings, and can enjoy a sense of privacy that is not often available at hospitals. The woman won’t have to worry about rushing to the hospital when she goes into labor, and during the labor she is able to eat, walk around, take showers or bathe and change positions. Midwives are available to provide one-on-one care.

Homebirths, however, do have cons associated with them, which should be seriously considered. If you have preexisting medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, a homebirth will not be your best option. You may require immediate medical care during labor, so the hospital is the safer choice for both you and the baby. Patients who decide to do a home birth must take greater responsibility for their physical and mental health, and if this is not possible, it’s best to deliver the baby in the hospital. Further, Cesarean Sections and forceps deliveries cannot be done during a homebirth.

The first year of your child’s life, everything changes. Suddenly it’s no longer just adults living in the house. You suddenly see everything through new, vulnerable eyes, and the world becomes a truly scary place. The scariest part may be when your apartment just isn’t big enough any longer. Looks like it’s time to move up.

When you hunt around for sizable Atlanta apartments, there are some issues you might need to contend with that you hadn’t thought of before. For one thing, while it might have been easy to carry your groceries up a flight or two of stairs when it was just you, also carrying your baby can add a significant degree of difficulty to the activity. As well, the size has to be divided up properly. While you might be able to negotiate for a reasonable price in a place where all three rooms are huge, unless you want your baby sleeping in your room or the living room, you’ll need to get a two bedroom place. This is a big difference for some people.

All in all, having a new baby is one of the best possible reasons to move to a larger apartment. But you have to use some sense, or you might find that decorating your new apartment is among the least of your concerns. In addition to that, you have to be concerned about the neighborhood more than you ever did before. While crime matters to you as an adult, the entire game changes when you have a baby. Would you want to subject your child to all the places you’ve lived?

Mothers always do take care of their babies but for those mothers, who are yet to overcome their weaknesses, either allow the close relatives or hire nurses to take care of their babies. Whoever is handling a baby must realize that babies require some extra care and the special touch that can make them comfortable in this world which is very new to them.

The first and foremost fact is that one must get the best crib or cradle for her baby that must be solid and smooth. It is necessary to check whether the cribs have any sharp edges or points, before buying one. One must always consult a doctor or follow the prescription while feeding the newborn. It is better to feed the newborns mainly with the liquid foods in a little portion at a time, so that the foods do not get chocked. While getting the baby a bath always use baby bathing elements like baby soaps, washes and shampoos or oils. Check the ingredients present in these bathing elements and make sure that they are absolutely safe for the baby. Any kind of electrical appliances must be kept at a safe distance during the bath.

Newborns must be kept in a temperature that will suit them. You can always ask the child specialists about various safety measures and all the procedures of handling a newborn. It is necessary to keep the household absolutely hygienic. There must be someone always available for the baby as the newborns must not be kept alone.

Many people don’t realize that they have the option to refinance their car loan as a way to save money. When you become pregnant it is often a good time to take a look at your finances and look for ways to cut down on your bills.

There are a quite a few reasons why you might want to consider refinancing your car loan in order to save money:

You have a high interest loan. If you bought your car at a time when your credit was not very good you may have had to get a high interest loan in order to buy the car. This is one of the best reasons to refinance the loan and reduce the rate.

You’re in an upside down loan. If you owe more for your car than what it is worth you may be able to correct this by refinancing. It is important to look at this situation carefully though before refinancing.

You need to reduce your monthly payment. Babies cost money and every little bit can help. A car refinance may help you to make ends meet while you are planning for the baby to come and after he arrives.

Your loan is through the dealership. Car dealerships can give you great deals on a car, but they don’t necessarily get you good deals on your interest rate. If you bought the car and had it financed through the dealership there is a very good chance you can lower your interest rate by refinancing the loan.

The ancient art of swaddling has made a huge comeback. Pediatricians recommend it and new parent’s everywhere are raving about it. Why? First and foremost, swaddling soothes and calms the new baby, allowing her to get to sleep. And second, it helps new parents get some needed sleep as well. Ideally, prospective parents should practice before their baby arrives. Practicing on an inanimate object, such as a doll or a teddy bear, helps new parents build the skill without the stress of a squirming, crying child.

Advantages of Swaddling

Increases feelings of calm and relaxation in the baby.

Regulates the baby’s temperature.

Smoothes the baby’s adjustment from the womb to the real world.

Creates a secure and comfortable environment for the baby.

The Technique

The swaddling technique is simple. You’ll need a square cotton blanket and a baby (or a baby substitute.)

1. Lay blanket on a flat surface.

2. Fold down one corner. (About 4 to 6 inches)

3. Place the baby on the blanket with the baby’s head on the fold.

4. Take the right side of the blanket and pull it over the baby. Tuck it under the baby’s back, just beneath her left arm.

5. Now take the left side of the blanket and pull it over the baby, tucking it under the baby’s back beneath her right arm.

Plain cotton receiving blankets work just fine for swaddling. However, there are a number of swaddling blankets on the market, that do all of the work for you. Either way, swaddling is just what your new baby needs!

It is essential to find a pediatrician for your child. Your pediatrician will be your source for advice on a number of issues as you go through motherhood, and it is important to have one that you and your child will trust. While you’re pregnant, or as early as possible, you should begin researching pediatricians to find one that is suitable.

Take advantage of all sources when it comes time to find a good pediatrician. If you have friends and family that know of good pediatricians, take their advice into consideration. Likewise, if you are in the same location where you grew up and your pediatrician is still practicing, that may be another way to go in your search.

Perform a search at Canada 411 for the pediatrician to find contact information and to schedule a visit. If you have not found leads for a pediatrician, you can also use a website like this to locate possibilities. It is also a good idea to interview more than one pediatrician.

When you arrive to the interview, take into account everything from the environment, working hours, and ease of getting appointments to the actual pediatrician; all of these factors will impact you and your child in regards to your decision. You’ll want to know all of these factors — from whether your insurance covers the pediatrician in question to the philosophies of the pediatrician — to make the decision.

Finding a pediatrician is a process. Do not rush into a decision as this is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. With care and research, you can choose the right pediatrician for your child.

When you bring your new baby home she will still have a stump of the umbilical cord remaining from where the doctor clamped and cut it during delivery. Generally this will fall off naturally in about two to three weeks. In the meantime there are several things you can do to ensure that it is cared for properly. Proper umbilical cord care is necessary to keep your baby healthy and happy.

When changing baby’s diaper, be sure to keep the diaper off the umbilical cord. This can be accomplished by purchasing diapers specifically designed with a cut out section for the umbilical cord. You may also want or need to fold the top of the diaper over to avoid it touching and rubbing on the cord.

The cord needs to be kept dry and clean at all times. One way to do this is to keep baby in diaper and a loose shirt to allow for proper air circulation which helps the cord to dry up and heal faster.

Never pull on the cord even if it looks as though it is ready to fall off. This can cause injury or infection. In rare cases the cord may not fall off on its own. In this situation you may need to contact your physician and have him remove it.

Give baby sponge baths and do not immerse the baby in water while the cord stump is still attached. This will help ensure that is dries and heals properly without introducing additional bacteria. If you notice discharge or a foul odor coming from the cord area you should take the baby into the doctor immediately to have the cord checked.

Every woman in unique and so is her labor and delivery. In fact, each labor can be different even in the same woman. Some women experience labor that is quick and easy and over in a matter of a few short hours. However, some labors are longer and harder, testing a woman’s endurance. Most labors, however, have three distinct stages.

During the early part of stage one of labor your cervix will begin to dilate. You may only feel some slight pressure and/or discomfort. In fact, many women do not even know they are in labor until they have already been in labor for many hours, sometimes days. Soon, however, you will begin to notice a very definite contraction pattern. Your cervix will continue to dilate up to ten centimeters. Your labor will become very obvious now and your contractions will be coming much closer together. In fact, towards the end of this stage it may begin to feel as though the contractions never let up.

Stage two is when you will actually deliver your baby. This stage can take a few minutes or several hours. You will now be encouraged to push during every contraction to speed up the process and bring your baby into the world! First-time moms and women who have had an epidural generally experience a longer second stage of labor.

You will experience a great sense of relief and joy once your baby is delivered. However, you are not done yet! You are now entering the third stage of labor which involves the delivery of the placenta. The placenta is delivered in an average of five to ten minutes but can take up to half an hour.

New parents have a lot to consider in this life-changing event. Not only will their priorities change, but they will also have a lot of tangible changes to make. When a couple is first married, they often don’t have a lot of extra money, so the family car is simply one that will get them from point A to point B. The size, fuel economy, safety, and condition of the car are often not huge factors in deciding which car to purchase. However, when a new baby enters the family, the size of the car suddenly matters a lot more. Fitting a bulky car seat comfortably into the backseat is step one and many hospitals won’t even allow parents to take the child home unless they see the seat, safely strapped into the car.

When couples are looking for a way to make money to purchase a larger car or pay higher rent, they may be thinking, “How can I sell my car fast“? This is a big step in becoming selfless parents, since they are putting the needs of their new baby first, and making sure it has everything it will need to live comfortably and safely.

Some new couples also elect to live in studio or one-bedroom apartments in the first years of their lives together, in order to save money and enjoy spending time together. But bringing a baby into such a cramped space can cause frustration among parents, and thus cause the baby to feel the tense atmosphere. Initially, many new parents like the baby to sleep in their bedroom for the first few months, but as the child grows, he or she will need space to crawl and walk around. Also, room is needed to put the new furniture, such as a crib, changing table, and other essentials. A larger apartment or home can help alleviate the stress, since the child can sleep in its own room and give the parents some space to themselves.

Near the end of your pregnancy you most likely have gotten everything ready for your baby and are anxiously awaiting your little one’s arrival. Having a baby changes everything. Are you ready?

If this is your first child there will be many things you may not have considered. Many of the activities you previously enjoyed may need to be put on hold for awhile. This does not mean that you cannot still enjoy these things but you need to remember you have another person that you are responsible for now. Most activities will take advance planning and organizing whether it is simply for bringing baby along or finding proper child care for the baby while you are away.

During the healing period you may find that tasks that you found easy before baby are much more difficult to do. This is not only due to the physical changes your body has been through but it is also due to more fatigue from lack of sleep. Instead of expecting that you can and should be able to continue managing everything yourself, you need to call in reinforcements!

It may take several months for you and baby to get into a routine that will allow you to obtain adequate sleep and start back on an exercise routine to help regain your strength. In the meantime coordinate with your husband for additional help around the house. Allow family and friends to help. If your finances allow it, hire someone to come in and do major housecleaning tasks for you for at least the first few months.

Eating properly during pregnancy is important not only for keeping baby healthy but it is also important for mom’s health and strength. The nutrients that you and your baby need can all be obtained from the foods you eat. Our bodies can process these nutrients better in their natural forms than in supplements. Adding vitamin C rich foods along with the ones suggested below will help your body absorb the other nutrients better.

One of the most important nutrients our bodies need is folic acid. Folic acid is essential for proper fetal development and to avoid birth defects. If you are contemplating pregnancy anytime soon, you may want to start eating more foods rich in folic acid. The best source of folic acid is found in liver. Some of the other foods that have high levels of folic acid include egg yolks, kidneys, chicken giblets, dried beans, almonds, nuts, whole grain breads, wheat flour, potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, bananas, oranges, and peaches. Fruits and vegetables should be eaten raw whenever possible, as cooking destroys folic acid.

Another important nutrient is iron. Low iron levels can lead to anemia and extreme fatigue. To help keep your iron levels up during pregnancy and increase your energy try adding some iron rich foods to your diet. Many of the foods that were listed previously that are rich in folic acid are also rich in iron. Iron rich foods include red meat, egg yolks, dark leafy greens such as collards or spinach, dried fruits like prunes and raisins, mollusks such as oysters, clams, or scallops, turkey or chicken giblets, beans, lentils, chick peas, liver, and artichokes.

There are many things you can do to ensure that you are getting the proper care and nutrition for yourself and your baby while you are pregnant. Consider staying away from all medications to treat pregnancy discomforts. There are many things you can do on your own to make your pregnancy more comfortable and healthier for you and your baby.

You can get the majority of the necessary vitamins and minerals that your body needs in the foods you eat. However, it is advisable to make certain that you have covered all of your nutritional needs with supplements. When choosing a supplement you will want to ensure that you are choosing a high quality one with the appropriate nutrients for pregnancy and that the ingredients are all natural and free of toxins.

For nausea try some deep breathing and relaxation exercises. Herbal teas can be helpful, although it is important to note if it is one that is recommended for pregnancy or not. Some of the most common ones include ginger, red raspberry, fennel seed, anise, or dried peach leaves. Increasing iron rich foods in your diet can also help. Aromatherapy using lavender, chamomile, or rose in massage oil can also be helpful.

Another common side effect of pregnancy is anemia or low iron levels. Many doctors tend to prescribe iron tablets to correct this issue. However, not only are these highly ineffective, but they can cause other problems. Instead, try some things on your own to correct your low iron levels. Eat foods rich in iron such as liver, oysters, beets, and leafy greens. Caffeine blocks the absorption of iron, so stay away from it. Vitamin C helps with the assimilation of iron in the system. Therefore, it is advisable to eat or drink something high in vitamin C along with your iron rich foods.

Having a baby is an exciting time in a couple’s life. Many couples join together in the hopes that someday they may start a family of their own together. There is something special about being able to open your hearts to a child, but with every child comes the responsibility to care for them as well. That can put quite a strain on the family finances.

If you are thinking about bringing a child into the world, you should be prepared for the cost of caring for a baby. First you need to ensure that you are able to care for the baby and his or her day-to-day financial needs. This means that you have to be freeing up the most money possible, so start by seeing what your available income is each month.

You want to factor in money for savings and all other fixed expenses. Fixed expenses are expenses that you currently pay each month, and they do not vary much. Once you compare that to your income, you should have a clearer picture of where you are at in regards to caring for the baby.

Of course, then you have to consider how to reduce those monthly expenses so you have the money free for your child. The first place is to try car refinancing. This option is a great way to reduce the monthly payments and even reduce the months you’ll have to pay for it.

If you have done that and are looking for additional savings, cutting back on your phone or cable bill is an easy place to start. Many people have unlimited cell phone use, but they pay far more for it when they don’t really need it. The same can be said of the cable bill. Cutting back on these expenses could be a healthy way to start building for your family. Having a baby is worth every penny you’ll spend caring for it.

Today, a beautiful and pregnant bride is not unusual.

Once engagement rings have been exchanged, the wedding day becomes supreme. Because the wedding day is such an important event for the bride, if she is also pregnant, specific items must be handled well to guarantee this day can be as perfect as possible.

The most important area to consider is the date; this will affect all other decisions. Whether the bride is in her first trimester or her last decides everything from dress to shoes to honeymoon.

So Number One: select your date carefully.

Number Two: the bridal dress.

Once you have selected your date, then it will be easier to plan for a beautiful bridal gown. The empire waistline is always in fashion and recently has made an even bigger comeback, making this choice a winner. The style is beautiful and also convenient for the bride as it should fit her well and look stunning, no matter when the wedding date is set.

Whatever style is decided, it is best to stick to the KISS principle as exaggerated ruffles, lace, etc. will also exaggerate an increase in the waistline. Whether buying off-the-rack or having your dress specially made, make sure that it will be comfortable AND beautiful when the great day actually arrives.

Number Three, one that most do not consider: the bridal shoes.

Even if the bride is not pregnant, this choice is usually based on beauty, not comfort. Realize that you will be standing most of the time. Make sure that comfort also goes with beauty. You might consider two pairs of shoes, one for the wedding and one for the reception.

Number Four: the honeymoon. If the bride is in her last trimester, a trip to the Bahamas may have to wait.

Be aware that carefully planning can make or break your special day. So plan carefully for a incredible experience. And, above all, enjoy!

Your baby has already been through major changes in the first nine months of his life. Within the next few months he may start walking and will continue to explore his surroundings and learn from them. His digestive system has developed to the point that he will be eating the same foods as the rest of the family soon.

Between ten and twelve months your baby will become an expert crawler! He will begin crawling up stairs and will learn how to move one arm with the opposite leg while crawling. Your baby has most likely already begun to pull himself up to furniture and may have already begun walking with assistance. Some babies will take their first steps on their own during this time period.

His fine motor skills will be developing to a point where he can pick things up with the thumb and forefinger in a pincher-type grasp. While his fine motor skills continue to develop over the next few months he will be able to hold a fork and spoon by himself. Once he has developed the skill of grasping he will learn to throw soon too. Of course, babies love to throw things so that you will pick them up again. This will quickly become a game to your baby. You will now notice that your baby has developed a preference for either the right or the left hand by now too.

Physically your baby has gone through drastic changes since he was a newborn. By the time your baby is one year old his birthweight has tripled and he will have added 10 to 12 inches in his height! Your baby’s digestive system has now developed to a point that you can add in foods such as wheat, eggs, meat, and fish. You still need to stay away from adding honey to your baby’s diet until after he is one year old.

Your baby has made many strides in his physical and social development up to this point. There are many more changes he will be experiencing over the next several months. During the time period from seven months to ninth months your baby will start developing his language skills and motor skills much more quickly now.

By now your baby is most likely sitting unaided. He may now begin to try to scoot or pull himself to get to objects he wants. Soon your baby will be getting up on his knees and will begin to crawl. Once your baby learns he can get around he will quickly develop other skills such as pulling himself up to furniture and may even begin taking steps while holding onto furniture or while holding someone’s hands.

Your baby’s first tooth will most likely come in around the seventh month. Some babies will get their first teeth sooner than this, but on an average you can expect it now. Once your baby’s first tooth pops through, many more will come in quickly. With your baby’s new teeth and the fact that his digestive tract is more developed now, you can begin introducing new foods and different textures to your baby’s diet.

Until now your baby’s vision has been about 20/40 at best but has now developed to the point where his clarity and depth perception are fully developed. By eight months he will be able to recognize people and objects from across the room.

Your baby will finally begin understanding that he is a fully independent person. Because of this your baby may develop some separation anxiety while learning that mommy will come back when she leaves even for a minute. At this point in a baby’s development they will begin to test your authority by refusing to do what he is told to do. This is not a matter of defiance, but rather exploration. He is simply curious and cannot remember things for more than a few seconds at a time.

As they say, Mother’s Day comes but once a year. For many women, as a holiday, Mother’s Day is just as important as an anniversary or a birthday. In other words, for husbands and fathers, circle Mother’s Day with a big red marker.

On Mother’s Day, it’s important to spoil a mother. Being a mom is hard work, and if it were not for the holiday, it would seem relatively thankless, too. This is why giving a gift on Mother’s Day is so important. Not sure where to start? Consider the following few options:

Flowers are a guaranteed win. Wives, girlfriends, and mothers always appreciate a full-bodied bouquet. Pay attention to what kind of flower your woman likes and pick a bouquet hosting that flower as its central focus. Additionally, a small box of chocolates along with some flowers never hurt anyone.

Have a baby? Surprise mom by dressing him or her up. Look around for some cute baby costumes and pick something that will keep junior swaddled and make mom happy. This could be as simple as a clever bib or a funny onesie that will help mom notice how much you care.

Some women may be harder to read and wouldn’t be offended if you gave them a thoughtful card with a gift card to their favorite store. Buy a card, write something nice, and give her money to spend on a fun shopping trip.

Consider a spa or massage certificate. No matter the holiday, everyone appreciates a free massage, manicure, or pedicure (or all three). Offer to watch the kids on an afternoon and give that special mother in your life a chance to relax and pamper herself, cost-free.

Aside from doing all of these things, offer to make dinner, too. Mother’s Day is a popular restaurant day, so if you want to avoid the crowds, stay in and treat her to something special — made by you!

During the first three months of your baby’s life she has gone through many changes but there are many more that will be happening over the next several months. Your baby will begin to develop more fine-tuned motor skills, verbal skills, and more over the next three months. During the first three months of your baby’s life she was adjusting to this new world and all of the sights, sounds, and smells that are new. Now your baby should be at a point where she has begun to settle into more of a routine.

During this time period you and your baby will start communicating more with each other. Your baby will respond to your body language as well as your speech. She will begin trying to mimic your facial expressions and the movement of your mouth. She will now begin to laugh out loud and may even squeal with excitement or delight while kicking her feet and giggling when happy or excited. Your baby will now start showing signs of enjoyment in activities such as bathing or games.

As she discovers how to use her body and make it do what she wants it to do, her motor skills will be improving and she will now start grasping at objects. Your baby will still have difficulty controlling her body well at this point, but she will be making more of an effort to learn. It will not take long for her to discover that she can roll over and will figure out how to roll back and forth. Soon she will be able to control her muscles well enough to balance herself and sit up.

An infant’s vision and hearing are developing more during this time period as well. The eye muscles have developed more fully and your baby should be able to follow movements with her eyes and is able to focus on small objects now too. Sounds are becoming more familiar to her as well, and she may turn towards specific sounds. By now your baby is learning the sounds of family member’s voices.

When you have children – especially if you’re first-time parents – you might not know all of the tax implications that come along with kids and their care. You can certainly claim your children as dependents on your tax return, and that will provide you with some important deductions. However, there are more than just the dependent credits. If you pay for childcare because you’re working and can’t be there all the time for your children, you can also deduct that. Many people don’t realize that childcare is a tax-deductible expense, so they miss the credit and don’t get any money back that they should have received.

Sometimes the IRS will send you a letter and notify you if you miss an obvious credit, because their system catches it, but they have no way of knowing whether you paid for childcare. They won’t be sending you any letters to make sure you’re claiming that credit. One of the best ways to remember to take the credit is to follow blogs that offer free tax tips on how to claim the credit. The filing program will ask you plenty of questions, including whether you paid someone for childcare. If you did, the program will help you put in the right information and get the maximum refund that you’re owed. It’s a great feeling to know that you don’t have to worry about that.

Children can be expensive, but they can also really help you out on your taxes. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t claim every credit and deduction that you’re rightfully entitled to, either. That money belongs to you, and you should go ahead and take it so that you can put it to good use for your children’s future. Pay down debt, start a college fund, or simply do something fun as a family – there are plenty of great options for a tax refund.

There are so many kids costumes for every occasion now, that parents, especially first-time ones, or those who can finally choose for a boy or girl after all those years of having to choose for only one sex or the other, can go overboard. Some of the costumes that can be purchased can cost as much or more than a designer outfit.

This can be very tempting, but you don’t have to spend that much to make your little bundle of joy look cute. Remember, he or she will probably only get one wear out of it. On this same subject, purchase the costume as close to the holiday as you can while leaving yourself enough time to get one before they run out. This way, you won’t have to worry about Precious growing out of the costume before she even had a chance to wear it the first time.

When shopping for your baby’s first costume, keep a few things in mind, such as the weather at the time the costume will be worn, your child’s age and size, and your child’s temperament. Kids costumes can be darling, with frills, lace, buttons, bows, and everything else, but if your child does not like wearing these or ordinary outfits, it isn’t going to be any different on a costume.

Simple kids costumes such as bumblebee or bunny ones are perfect for children between the ages of newborn to six months. These are always precious; especially when they have a hood part that fits snugly but comfortably around the face. The good thing about these types of kids costumes also is that frequently they come in one piece, so you don’t have to worry about trying to fit a headband with bunny ears or bumblebee antennae on a little head or attaching wings or a cotton tail to a squirmy back or bottom.

Being a first-time mom can be a scary prospect, but learning more about what to expect ahead of time can relieve some of the apprehension you may be feeling. Your new baby will go through a lot of changes in the first year of his/her life. In the first three months of life your baby will go from being a newborn that mostly eats and sleeps to a baby that is beginning to discover things around him/her. The changes your baby will go through will happen quickly and it will be an exciting time for you as the parents as well as for your baby.

Newborn babies require frequent feedings, diapering, and comforting. Enjoy this time with your infant because he/she will grow and develop quickly. At first your baby’s head is wobbly and needs extra support before he/she develops the muscles to properly control the head. In the beginning your baby may try to focus on your face and may turn his/her head towards sounds, etc.

As your baby develops many changes will take place. Your baby will begin to develop more head control and will begin to hold his/her head up when placed on the belly. By the third month your baby may even be pushing up slightly on his/her hands. Your baby’s kicking and movements will become more vigorous. Within the first couple of months of your baby’s life he/she will begin to smile and may even make cooing noises when content. He/she will begin to recognize people in his/her daily life. You may notice your baby reaching for you during feeding or when wanting to be comforted.

Enjoy every minute with your newborn baby. This time will go quickly and your infant will be learning and growing at the fastest developmental rate of his/her entire life during this time. Capture these memories through journals and pictures. You are with your child every day and may not even notice how quickly your baby is growing!

Having your first child is a wonderful experience. From the first steps to the first words, you will marvel at how your baby grows and develops. Being a mom is not always sunshine. Sometimes, bad things can happen when you least expect it. One of the biggest hassles you might have to face as a mother is your car breaking down. Without your car, you and your baby are stuck, even in an emergency. If money is tight, you may not be able to afford basic supplies, like diapers and wipes, because you have to fix your car. Instead of choosing between your baby’s needs and fixing the car, consider some alternatives.

• Borrow from friends and family. – You may have to swallow your pride but there is no shame in asking friends and family for help fixing your car. Your family loves you and your baby, too, so in most cases, they will be happy to help.

• Take out a payday loan. – Payday loans from paydayone.com are another alternative. If you are not comfortable asking for money from your family and friends, getting a short-term loan may be the answer. The qualification process is easy and you can have the money to fix your car as fast as the next day.

• Borrow a car. – Instead of asking for money from your family and friends, consider asking to borrow a car. This will allow you to save up the money to have your car repaired and you can still have money for your baby’s basic needs.

Choosing between costly car repairs and meeting the needs of your baby is not a choice any mother should have to make. Unforeseen events happen of course when you least expect. Your child should always come first so utilize the resources around you to get your car repaired. You may be surprised at how quickly others will be willing to help.

Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more common for doctors to just prescribe pain medications for a woman in labor rather than listening to her desires. Some doctors and nurses may have the impression that they know better what you “need” than you do. It is important that you stand your ground for what you truly want. Ultimately it is your decision whether you choose to have pain medications or not during labor.

The decision whether or not to have pain medications given to you during labor needs to be discussed ahead of time with your spouse as well as your doctor. Although you may change your mind during labor, if you are absolutely adamant that nothing be given to you, your spouse or labor coach needs to know this ahead of time so that they can advocate for you. Do not let yourself be bullied into taking something or having something given to you that you know you really do not want. Also, remember that it is your right to change your mind.

If, however, you find during labor that you just cannot continue without something for the pain and discomfort, then by all means make it clear to everyone that this is your body and your decision and you have changed your mind. Again, it is important that you and your spouse discuss all scenarios and options ahead of time so that you can both be on the same page with your medical care. The more you have planned out ahead of time and have discussed, the less tension and stress you will have to deal with during labor and delivery.

Being young and inexperienced is absolutely no excuse for being treated as though you can’t possibly know what you are doing. If this is how you are treated by your physician when you are expressing a desire for no pain medications, then it may be time to look for a doctor who is going to respect you and your wishes.

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you have to deal with it. In fact, there isn’t one family that hasn’t gone through some emergency situation that they needed cash right away. If you find yourself in this situation the first thing to do is to stay calm. There are financial resources that are available to you that will get you the cash you need. Here is a look at some of the most popular types of financial resources that get families the money when they need it most.

The first type of financial resource available is the application for a short term loan. Short term loans are available through a bank or financial institute. Short term loans are generally used for those situations that can wait a day or so because short term loans can take anywhere from two to five business days to be approved. The downside to short term loans is that it requires you to pay it back with interest over a short period of time.

The second type of available financial resource is a payday loan. Payday loans are great financial resources for those family emergencies because you can generally get the money within minutes of applying for the loan. This makes it a great resource for when you need money fast. In fact, families have been known to turn to GreatPlainsLending to get them the cash that they need when they need it most because they don’t require you to wait prolonged periods of time for your loan to be approved.

The third type of available financial resource is a home equity loan. Should an emergency arise and you own a home, you can actually borrow against the home. This will allow you to get a large amount of money quickly. However, the downside of a home equity loan is that should you not pay it back you will lose your house.

There are many old wives’ tales about pregnancy. These stories and superstitions are handed down from one generation to the next. In the age of the Internet, expectant moms can be their own mythbusters, using online tools to sort facts from fairy tales and become knowledgeable.

There are many websites that offer accurate and dependable pregnancy information. You’ll want to pay particular attention to information on diet and exercise. Giving your body the appropriate doses of vitamins is incredibly important for your baby’s development because whatever goes into your body also goes into your baby’s body. Likewise, eating the right foods and achieving a balanced intake of nutrients are strategies that help your baby grow. Knowing how to eat well during pregnancy can stave off potential health threats such as gestational diabetes and toxemia (preeclampsia). There are also guidelines for the exercises and level of exertion that are appropriate throughout pregnancy. Women need to know what they can do to keep their bodies active during pregnancy without harming their baby.

One of the biggest areas of concern for pregnant women is how the pregnancy will impact their bodies. Give yourself time each week to do some online research, finding pregnancy information about how your body is changing as the baby grows. Throughout pregnancy, there are changes in your body’s hormone levels, appearance, stamina, mobility, weight, and metabolism. Being clued in to what is normal and what isn’t will help you identify potential health problems early so you and your doctor can address them before they progress too far.

Of course, doing this kind of research during pregnancy is just the start of being a good mom. Once the baby arrives, you’ll find yourself hopping online after the little one is asleep to learn more about colic, fevers, and other questions and common issues that cause concerns for new parents. Find those resources now, before your baby arrives, so you’ll be prepared.

What many people do not realize is that much of the pain experienced during labor and delivery is preventable. How can this be possible? The reality is that in modern medicine so much emphasis is put on pain relievers that the old-fashioned ideas of relaxing the mother and helping her through the birthing process have been laid aside. Although there may be a time and place for the use of pain medications, you have the right to go through the birthing process without them if you so choose.

Dealing with the discomfort of labor and delivery is what needs to be done to manage the pain effectively. There are several ways of accomplishing this. One form of pain management that can be utilized is by using counter pressure. For example, in the situation where a mother is experiencing back labor applying pressure to the lower back can help reduce the pressure and pain that the mother is feeling.

Becoming more aware of all of the senses and calming the entire body will be helpful as well. You may choose to dim the lights and maybe even burn candles to provide a soft glow to the birthing environment. Using aromatherapy to create a calming, soothing effect on the senses is another way to relax the body. Providing a quiet space and using soft speaking voices and possibly quiet relaxing music will further provide a calming effect.

Learning proper breathing techniques will be helpful in aiding to calm and relax the body during the birthing process. Ensuring that your birthing partner understands these and can help you with them will be important as well.

People get into debt through all kinds of different avenues. While it is tempting for the people who never seem to have bad financial luck to become all judgmental of those who have tons of debts, the simple fact of the matter is that things such as medical bills, accidents and needy family members are hard to avoid. And they are often even harder to deal with, in the complexity and sheer scale of their aftermath. If you have ever found yourself unable to work and used your credit cards to get yourself through the bad times, you no doubt have some empathy. But a lot of people never seem to understand. However, no matter how bad your situation may be, there are options that are available to you.

A lot of times, your children are the hardest hit members of your family. They did nothing to deserve the struggle and sacrifice that deep debts often force on the family. And it no doubt breaks your heart to not be able to give them all that they deserve. They are the best kids in the world, right? But while you might not be able to give them all of thevery best things, you can give them some very solid lessons about what you can do when you have fallen down. You get back up, and you keep on going toward what you want to accomplish.

A lot of times, parents like to shield their children from the bad things that go on from an adult perspective. But if they are old enough to understand, you should definitely include them in discussions about what is going on. When you visit a debt consolidation service (which is always a good idea), you should even consider taking your children along. While it might be painful to explain to them that for once you do not have the situation in hand, they will respect what you are doing.

Of course it is your instinct and desire to want to hold your baby every minute you possibly can. It is advisable, however, that whenever your baby is sleeping that you let your baby sleep and do not disturb the baby unless it is necessary to wake your baby to feed him/her. The reasoning behind this is that when you spend the majority of your time holding, caressing, and cuddling your baby you are not getting the rest you need and are training the baby that they need to be held all the time.

It is natural to want to love and cuddle your baby as much as possible, but at the same time you want to train your baby to sleep without being held and that it is okay to spend some time out of mother’s arms too. There are plenty of opportunities while your baby is awake to cuddle and get to know each other better. In fact, during the first month of your baby’s life you will spend the majority of your time feeding and changing your baby’s diapers.

One of the things you will want to start working on right away when you bring your newborn home is to train your baby in his/her sleeping pattern. It takes several weeks to work through this, but it is well worth the time and effort. While your baby was in the womb there was no real night and day pattern. Your baby woke and slept whenever it was most convenient, in fact your baby probably slept during the day when you were up and moving because of the rocking action of movement.

Now that your baby is on the outside they continue to desire that rocking motion for sleep. You cannot always be available to rock your baby yourself and you honestly should not get your baby in the habit of doing so. Therefore, you may decide that you want to offer other solutions such as a swing or bassinet that has a rocking motion.

Nervous about bringing your baby home for the first time? Here’s a list of absolute essentials to have already in your home before you go into labor.

1.) A sleeping option.
It doesn’t matter what you choose–bassinet, crib, or Pack N’Play. For first-time parents, a Pack ‘N Play might be the best option for first time parents because they’re space-effective and easily portable.
2.) Bathing Options.
You’re going to need something safe to prevent drowning, be it a ring or an infant tub.
3.) Diapers.
Whether you choose cloth, disposable, or a diaper service, you want to research your options before you bring your newborn baby home.
4.) Carseat. Many hospitals will check your car to see if you have a safe seat for your baby before allowing you to take your infant home.
5.) Swing. While it may not seem like an ESSENTIAL, you may be underestimating just how needy your newborn will be. If you want to get anything done–dinner, housework, etc.– a swing is a safe space for your baby to be.
6.) Snuggly. Again, sometimes you will need to have both hands free but still have your newborn close. A snuggly or sling will safely free up your hands.
7.) Baby monitor. Some are audio and some are video.
8.) Cap. Even in the summer, much of your baby’s heat escapes through their head.
9.) Receiving blanket. Infants love to be swaddled, and this will make them feel warm and secure.
10.) Diaper cream. You’ll want to have this on hand just in case.
11.) Baby wipes. You’ll be surprised how many other uses you’ll find for these besides diaper changes.
12.) Burping rags. Always keep one on hand for spit-up.
13.) Baby shampoo. Regular shampoo isn’t safe for delicate infants
14.) Baby detergent. Your infant will require a gentler detergent for their clothes.
15.) Thermometer. An absolute necessity.
16.) Pacifier. Your newborn needs this up until 3 months of age.

Many fathers tend to feel left out from the mother-newborn bonding process. Let’s face it, fathers don’t carry children in their stomach and they certainly don’t breast-feed. Babies come out of the womb with a natural connection towards their mother. However, the most important things for new dads to remember is that a prior bond shouldn’t intimidate them from bonding with their own child. Here are some ways to do just that.

1.) Take part in feeding time.
Dads can still play a major role in feeding even if you decide to breast-feed your baby. Simply have your wife pump enough for at least one feeding and use a bottle to feed your infant. If she pumps enough, you get to play a part in the midnight feedings as well. While that may not sound remotely appetizing, you’ll be surprised how much it makes you bond with your child.
2.) Don’t be afraid of comforting.
Okay, maybe your baby quiets quicker when she’s handed to Mom. You can still comfort too, even if it takes a little longer. Soon you’ll develop your own cuddling and comforting strategies for a wailing baby.
3.) Participate in bath time.
You may even want to consider taking your child in the bath with you.
4.) Read to your baby.
Read the books you loved as a child to your newborn. It’s a great way to bond, especially before bed.
5.) Coax your baby to sleep.
Whether your method of choice is rocking, patting, or a bedtime story, find a way that works for both of you.

Bonding with your baby basically boils down to one thing: spend time with your baby. Don’t be afraid of your newborn infant. Sure, a baby is delicate and fragile; but you shouldn’t let that intimidate you. You’re just as good of a parent as any mom. Now get out there and participate in your baby’s 4 AM wake-up calls!

Ever heard of diaper services? If you’re a first-time parent, probably not. A diaper service will come to your house, deliver fresh cloth diapers, and take away all your used cloth diapers. They’ll then clean them at a facility and bring them back. Depending on what disposable diapers you use, it may even be more cost-effective than disposables. It’s a much more environmentally friendly way to handle diaper changes, but is a diaper service right for you?

Pros of a diaper service:

-Cloth diapers are much more environmentally friendly than disposable diapers, and cleaning them at a facility uses less resources than a home washing machine.
-Since your diapers are delivered, there’s no need to constantly run out to the store.
-You won’t be faced with the unpleasant task of cleaning cloth diapers.
-Potty training is much easier because it’s more unpleasant for a child to sit in wet cloth than a wet disposable diaper.
-There’s less of a chance for diaper rash since wet cotton still allows the skin to breathe, unlike disposable diapers.
-Some diaper services offer combination cloth-disposable combination packages, in which the service will also take your used disposable diapers and deliver them to a compost pile.
-No increased garbage fees because of all your disposable diapers.

Cons of a diaper service:
-It’s exceedingly difficult to travel with cloth diapers.
-Storage may be an issue, two or more diaper pails may be needed since delivery only comes once a week.
-Depending on which service or disposable diaper you choose, it can be more expensive than disposables.
-Cloth diapers are more likely to leak than disposables.
-Cloth diapers are terrible for loose or watery bowel movements.
-Diaper pins are inconvenient and easily misplaced.
-You must remember to put your diapers out every week.
-There’s more planning involved as you must guesstimate which amount of diapers is best for your child.

Do you have some old cloth diapers lying around from a previous child? Have you just used some too much that they’ve worn thin? Here are some alternate uses for your old cloth diapers.

1.) Cleaning rags. Cloth diapers are the perfect cleaning rags. Cloth rags are lint-free so they won’t leave lots of fuzzballs everywhere. They’re sturdy, they hold moisture well, and they’re the ideal size. Keep some under your sink or in your closet.
2.) Dusting rags. Cloth diapers are great for wiping down wood or dusting your house.
3.) Burping rags. Throw this over your shoulder while you’re burping your baby to avoid messing up your clean clothes.
4.) Diaper bag wipes. It’s a fact of parenthood: your baby will throw up or spit up while you’re out in public. Cloth diapers are thin, absorbant, and travel well.
4.) Tye-dye cloths. Practicing tye-dye or looking for things to dye with the kids besides T-shirts? Cloth diapers hold dye well and they’re perfect for practicing designs.
5.) Pet bandannas. Your pet will definitely not care if their bandanna has been on a baby’s bottom. Consider dying them, too. You can also use them to dry off a pet’s paws or fur after a rainy walk.
6.) Sell them. Believe it or not, there is a market for used cloth diapers, such as the Used Diaper Company. If you’re looking for more cloth diapers, you can buy them from the Used Diaper Company too.
7.) Training pants. If you’re good with a sewing machine, use cloth diapers to whip up some training pants for your toddler. Additionally, you can create special pajama bottoms or sleep underwear for middle-of-the-night accidents.
8.) Sheets for the accident-prone. If your child is having problems with bed-wetting, consider stitching together cloth diapers into a sheet or quilt for them to sleep on. These sheets will be a lot softer than rubber sheets, but more absorbent than typical sheets.

If you have a cat and you’re pregnant, chances are someone has already warned you about toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is transmitted by cats and it can cause birth defects in your unborn child, but it’s generally not something you need to be concerned about as long as you take proper precaution. Here’s what you need to know about toxoplasmosis.

Cats are not the only species who can contract toxoplasmosis. In fact, humans can just as easily get it as cats. Cats are the only species whose feces carries the infectious disease, so litter boxes can carry the disease. However, toxoplasmosis is generally transmitted through consuming the raw or undercooked meat of an animal who carried toxoplasmosis. If you give your cat raw meat or it likes to hunt a lot of mice, it’s something to watch out for. However, an infected cat’s feces only become infectious after one to five days. If you change your litter box every day, it won’t be a problem. Additionally, the only way to contract the disease from feces is if a woman ingests the infected feces. The simple act of washing your hands after cleaning your cat’s litter box takes care of this.

If you’re still worried about toxoplasmosis, simply stay away from raw or undercooked meat. Be thorough when you rinse unwashed vegetables. Wear gloves while taking care of the litter box and always scrub your hands afterwards. Keep the litter box clean and change it every day. Alternatively, coerce your spouse into taking over litter box duty while you’re pregnant–it’ll give you a nine month break from cleaning the litter box!

Never get rid of your cat simply because of the fear of toxoplasmosis. Your risks are too low and animal shelter populations are too high to even consider giving up your cat.

Spend your pregnancy preparing your dog for a new baby’s arrival so your pet is relaxed and comfortable with your new bundle of joy. The following tips will help prepare your pet for your baby’s arrival. Take the time now–you’ll be so glad you did when your baby comes home. Remember to make these preparations months ahead of time so so you won’t be running around training a pet and taking care of a newborn.

1.) Consider spay or neutering.
In addition to ensuring your pet won’t bring unwanted offspring into the world, spaying or neutering generally makes a dog much calmer and less likely to be aggressive or territorial.

2.) Make sure your pet is healthy and its vaccinations are up to date.
The last thing you want is to endanger your newborn due to a missed vaccination that could’ve been easily taken care of ahead of time.

4.) Resolve behavioral issues now.
If your dog has serious behavioral concerns, it’s time to discourage that behavior now. Consult a specialist if your dog is especially aggressive or anxious. You won’t have near as much time after your baby is born to train or retrain your dog.

5.)Invite anyone with a baby over to your house to get your dog used to infants.

6.) Curb jumping.
Now’s the time to train your dog not to jump up. Consider obedience training to help with a particularly difficult dog. Teach your dog not to roughhouse–or at least only to roughhouse in appropriate settings.

8.) Train your dog to leave you alone while you’re on the floor so you may have an infant on your lap with no worry.

9.) Play sound bites of a baby’s cry to accustom your dog to the sound. While this may seem excessive, do you really want your dog howling while your newborn is already crying? Pair the recording with treats or affection so your dog associates crying with positive experiences.

Being a new parent can be really tough on your bank account. A newborn requires a constant supply of diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, baby detergent, burp rags, blankets, bottles, etc. etc. Yet you still want to make your baby’s nursery look welcoming for your newborn, right? Here are some tips for budget-friendly nursery decor.

1.) Strike the repainting idea.
Gallons of paint can become expensive really quick. If you can’t take time off to do a full-scale remodel, consider repainting the nursery’s trim or stenciling accents on the walls. You can also put up appliques instead. Remember, if you do decide to repaint the room, you’ll need scrubbable paint for the crayon-wielding toddler your newborn will soon become.

2.) Use pictures for nursery decor.
Pictures are relatively inexpensive to print and your child will grow up surrounded by family and friends.

3.) Shop at thrift stores for furniture.
You can paint and personalize it yourself if you don’t like the color or finishing. Just remember it’ll be a lot cheaper than getting it new. Even used baby good stores will mark prices higher than you’d find at a Goodwill or Salvation Army store. Be careful though–older cribs will have bars that are too far apart. Make sure that the crib, changing table, or other furniture meets modern safety standards. Also, be careful to avoid painted objects made before the mid-seventies, as it might be painted with lead paint.

4.) Stitch your own curtains.
You’ll also be able to tell your child how you made their curtains.

5.) Consider foregoing the changing table.
You may not even need a changing table. Get a diaper changing pad instead and keep it handy. If you do want a hard, high surface, consider retrofitting a dresser to become a changing table. Use the top drawer as a holding place for diapers, cream, and wipes. Install some straps on the dresser surface to keep your baby safe.

Having a baby can get really expensive really fast. With everything you have to buy (bassinet, changing table, swing, diapers, etc.), you’ll need to save money everywhere you can. Try these tips for saving money on newborn clothing.

1.) Buy used. Babies grow so fast that you’ll find tons of inexpensive used clothing that’s still in great shape. Some will look almost new. Do your research, too– thrift stores will often designate one day as “half price day” or mark down particular items on certain days. This is a great option for special occasion clothes such as christening outfits or Christmas outfits.

2.) Buy in bulk. You’ll often find baby clothes packaged in bulk at department stores much like the way we buy socks or undershirts. There’s no need to buy individually.

3.) Stock up now. If older or bigger clothes go on sale, don’t be afraid to buy them. Your baby will grow quickly and you’ll need those clothes sooner than you think.

4.) Sell older clothes as your newborn grows. Your baby won’t be wearing newborn clothes for very long and your clothes should still be in great shape. This way you can get some of your initial expenses back.

5.) Make your own. Convert scrap fabric or old clothes into baby clothes. Newborns can wear a lot of gowns, so they’ll be easy to make. You can turn old clothes into baby blankets, too.

6.) Shop in the off-season. Buy summer clothes in autumn, winter clothes in late spring, etc. The best way to do this is to shop while you’re pregnant and stock up on all the clothes you’ll need. Plan out a calender. For example, if you’re due on June 25th, you’ll need a six-month-old Christmas outfit. This way, you’ll know what to buy in the off-season.

Are you about to embark on an airplane trip with your baby? Always consider your child’s safety before flying. The first thing you’ll need to consider is a child restraint system, or CRS (sometimes called a car seat). The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, recommends that you always travel with a CRS during flights due to the possibility of turbulence or emergency landings. In the interest of your child’s safety, it’s best to travel with a CRS instead of keeping your child on your lap.

According to the FAA, babies weighing less than twenty pounds should have a CRS that faces the rear. A child between twenty to forty pounds should have a CRS that faces forward. After fourty pounds, the airplane seat belt can then be used. Remember that harness vests and booster seats are prohibited on airplanes. If your child requires a booster seat at your final destination, you’ll have to check it along with your other baggage.

Measure your car seat or CRS several days before your trip. If it’s less than sixteen inches wide, it will fit in most airplane seating. Many airlines also offer discounted fare for child tickets, so be sure to ask. You cannot use a CRS without a ticket, so your child will need one. Almost all airlines do deliver a discounted fare for children, and many will be as high as fifty percent off the price of a ticket. Don’t forget to ensure your seats will be right next to each other so you can be right next to your child throughout the flight.

Finally, some airlines provide their own CRS for flying children and you will not be allowed to bring your own. You’ll have to check it with the rest of your luggage.

Ask the airline if there are any empty seats on your flight. Many airlines will allow you to strap in your CRS in an empty seat next to yours.

Are you concerned about your baby’s sleep habits? Hopefully this list of baby nap facts will ease your worries.

1.) Any nap is better than no nap at all. Even if your baby will only fall asleep in her car seat, don’t sweat it too much. Whenever possible, shoot for a nice long nap in the crib, because it’s much more restorative. At the end of the day, though, just be thankful for any nap time you got.
2.) Babies need at least 45 minutes of sleep per nap. Otherwise, they won’t be refreshed at all. However, if your baby only sleeps for 45 minutes, don’t sweat it. Some babies only need two 45-minute naps a day.
3.) Your baby needs sleep, but he will sleep when he’s tired. Don’t try to force naps too hard. Yes, your baby needs sleep, but don’t worry too much about strict scheduling. You and your baby will fall into your own rhythm in time. Don’t force your baby to stay awake when his eyelids are fluttering, either.
4.) Find your own routine. Does your baby sleep best when you read “Goodnight Moon?” Does she sleep best to a lullaby CD or to your own singing? Do you have to pat her, rock her, or gently move the crib to get her to sleep? You’ll find lots of little tricks along the way to help her sleep. If something isn’t working, try something else. Don’t be discouraged. Eventually, you’ll work out a routine that works for both of you.
5.) Don’t do swing or rocker naps all the time. Standby motionless sleep works the best over constant naps in a moving swing.
6.) Adjust your baby’s schedule according to your own. If your baby sleeps through lunch and dinner, wake him earlier in the day so he’ll be tired sooner. If your baby is going to sleep too early, wake him later.

First-time parents may not know what to expect. This guide might put your worrying mind at ease.

Week One

Expect your tiny newborn to do a lot of sleeping immediately after birth. Your newborn just entered the world for the first time–he’s going to be pretty tired, and so are you. Eventually, however, your infant is going to get really demanding really soon. He’s still adjusting to the new world he just landed in. At first, it may seem like your baby is constantly crying and you’re not adequately meeting his needs. That’s not really true, you just haven’t learned to speak your baby’s language yet. Soon you’ll recognize how the sounds he makes while he’s hungry differentiate between the sounds he makes when he’s sleepy. Don’t expect your baby to sleep through the night, either. He’ll be hungry too often for that.

Month One

Your baby still won’t be sleeping as long as you’d like, but you’ll probably be getting a handle on what means “I need a diaper change” and what means “I want to lay down.”

Month Two

You’ll start to feel an even deeper connection with your child in the second month. Your baby will still be a tiny, oft-screaming creature who still panics you when she does something you didn’t expect. However, look for your baby to smile at you for the first time. Nothing warms a heart faster than your first baby smile. You’ll know when it’s not accidental if your baby is looking at you and sharing a real connection. If you smile, then they smile back at you in response, you know it’s not gas.

Your baby should still be on an all-milk diet without any supplemental water or juice. She will probably be taking shorter naps than she did when she was one month old.

So you gained a few pounds in pregnancy. Newsflash: everyone does. Don’t sweat it. If you’re in a huge rush to lose those post-pregnancy pounds, you may be hurting your baby too. After all, if you’re breastfeeding, you’re responsible for his nutrients, too. Even if you opt not to breastfeed, you’re going to need tons of energy in order to care for both you and your baby twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Here are a list of foods that WebMD recommends for new moms.

1.) Dairy products that are low in fat.
Your breast milk will keep your baby happy and chock full of calcium. However, if you aren’t consuming enough calcium for two, your baby won’t suffer, but you will. Make sure you get enough calcium in your diet. One of the best ways to do this is to consume dairy products. Dairy products like milk, cheese, or yogurt will also provide you with healthy vitamins, so eat at least three cups of dairy products every day.

2.) Lean beef.
Beef that’s lean in fat content will provide you with a healthy source of iron, protein, and vitamin B-12. Lean beef provides you with all of this. Having enough iron in your diet helps to ensure your energy levels won’t plummet, something that will be important when you’re trying to live your life around a newborn’s schedule.

3.) Salmon.
We all know that fish is one of the healthiest proteins around and that eating fish instead of fattier proteins will help you shed pounds faster. However, salmon has something even more beneficial for you and your baby: Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. DHA is an essential dietary requirement for newborns, and salmon contains lots of it. There have been studies which found that DHA may also help relieve symptoms of post-partum depression.

Are you looking for more healthy foods for your new mom diet? When you’re feeding for two, it becomes essential to make sure you’re eating enough nutrients for two, also. Even if you’re not breastfeeding, eating well will help your body have everything it needs to keep up with the demands of a new baby. These foods are all recommended healthy food diet choices by WebMD, so don’t hesitate to add them into your diet in creative ways.

1.) Brown rice.
Forget Atkins. A low-carb diet is exactly what you don’t need shortly after having a baby. Your body needs carbohydrates, but you can eat healthier carbohydrates by choosing whole-grain options, such as brown rice. You’ll be burning a lot of calories when you care for a new baby. Just make good choices with your calorie intake and you’ll be fine.

2.) Legumes. If you don’t buy lean beef or you don’t want to eat it all the time, legumes are healthy and rich in iron and protein. Shoot for black or kidney beans.

3.) Oranges.
Oranges serve as an incredible energy source as well as a supply of vitamin C that moms need to fight off infections. You can thrown oranges in diaper bags and eat them on the go or as a light breakfast or afternoon snack. Orange juice will get you that all-important Vitamin C just as well.

4.) Blueberries.
Any mom needs a decent amount of fruit in her diet each day. Moms who breastfeed need at least two servings per day. Blueberries contain nourishment and healthy antioxidants that are great for your body. As an added benefit, blueberries are easily stored in a Tupperware container and are great to munch on while you’re on the go. Their sweetness may take away some of your chocolate cravings, too.

No matter if you choose to breastfeed your new baby or not, you’ll still need to keep your body in great shape. While you may be overly eager to lose your residual baby weight, you’ll do more for your baby if you stay away from miracle diets and opt for eating a healthy balanced diet instead. These foods are all healthy new mom diet choices according to WebMD. Don’t forget to talk to your doctor to get a more specialized plan according to your body if you’re breastfeeding.

1.) Whole wheat bread.
Throw out the white bread. Not only are you missing out on tons of flavor, but many essential nutrients as well. Whole grain bread contains folic acid, an essential nutrient for your body. Whole grain pasta also contains this necessary ingredient. Whole grain pastas and bread also contain fiber and iron, two other great supplements that your body needs.

2.) Green leafy vegetables.
If you want to lose weight, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not eating green leafy vegetables. While your body needs a BALANCED diet, not a lettuce-only diet, green leafy vegetables have low calorie counts and vitamin A-filled. They also provide calcium and antioxidants. Skip the iceberg lettuce and go with a nice spinach salad instead. Don’t forget about broccoli and other green leafy veggies as well.

3.) Eggs.
Is there a more versatile food than eggs? Cooking, baking, scrambling, poaching, frying, putting into an omelette, fritatta, or quiche–all of these cooking options will give you plenty of vitamin D. If you’re in love with egg white-only recipes, you’ve got to throw them out if you want the Vitamin D. Only the yolk contains that essential nutrient. Certain places also carry DHA-fortified eggs for an even healthier eating option. DHA is a fatty acid that all babies need, so if you’re breast feeding, consider springing for those to keep your own DHA levels high.

If you’re considering breastfeeding but are nervous about having to nurse all the time or have your breasts exposed in public, a breast pump can be your new best friend. The benefits of breast pumping are endless. If anyone besides you is watching your baby, particularly if you’re a working mom, you’ll need to pump breast milk, no questions asked. If you’re in a public setting that doesn’t bode well for breastfeeding (or maybe it’s just really cold), you’re going to want a bottle of breast milk in your diaper bag. Lastly, what many breastfeeding women don’t realize is that they can allow dads to bond with babies at feeding time by pumping and allowing him to do at least one feeding. Breastfeeding your child is an incredibly unique, intimate experience, and allowing Dad to feed the baby will ensure he gets that special bonding time too.

Breast pumping generally only takes around fifteen to twenty minutes. Some companies even make double pumps now, which expedites the pumping process by pumping from both breasts at the same time. Breast pumps come in a multitude of varieties and costs. Hand operated models may be best for stay-at-home moms who won’t need to be away from their baby for very long. They can run as little as fifteen dollars. Pricier (but more convenient) models can run all the way up to $200 or more. There’s no need to pay this much if you do a little research. If pumping is going to be an everyday affair for you, you should probably consider springing for an electric pump. If you plan on switching to formula in a short amount of time, buying an expensive pump probably isn’t the best plan for you. The aforementioned double pumps can be pricey, but they’re transportable and convenient for busy moms who are on the go.

If you’re expecting a baby, congratulations! You probably know the importance of giving your child the best start possible. Your habits while you’re pregnant will directly affect the development and health of your growing baby, so prenatal care is crucial.

Taking care of your baby before he or she is born includes:

- Quitting unhealthy habits. If you smoke or drink, ideally you should stop before trying to get pregnant. Once you find out you’re pregnant, smoking and drinking should stop. Your baby ingests everything you ingest, and even a few drinks during pregnancy could result in developmental problems.

- Taking care of yourself. Skipping on sleep, eating unhealthy foods, and not visiting the doctor when you’re sick can also negatively affect your child’s development. Make sure you put your own health as a priority; it’s your baby’s health too!

- Watching your diet. Most expectant mothers have strange cravings. But don’t give in to too many unhealthy foods.

- Getting plenty of exercise. Regular exercise is important to keep your weight at a healthy level. It can also help ease the labor and delivery process.

- Taking prenatal vitamins. Prenatal vitamins provide extra vitamins that are crucial to your baby’s healthy development in the womb. Buy some and keep them in a spot where you will remember to take them each day.

- Visiting the OB-GYN regularly. You should select an ob-gyn as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, or even before. Regular visits to your doctor can help you know how to take care of your growing child, and can also pinpoint any potential problems by monitoring your child as he or she grows.

Making prenatal health a priority will help him or her grow to be as healthy as possible. These are a few tips for taking care of your growing baby.

Part of caring for your baby is regular check-ups to the pediatrician. But how do you choose the perfect doctor for you and your baby? Consider these tips:

- Start early. Ideally, you will have a pediatrician picked out before you have your baby. Start looking for a doctor before you have your baby. Doctors get to know their patients, and many parents find it comforting when their pediatricians know their child’s history.

- Ask for recommendations. Ask friends or family members who have recently had children if they can recommend a good pediatrician. At the same time, ask if there is anyone they would not recommend. Lots of parents find out through trial and error whether a doctor is a good fit or not.

- Consider gender. Assess whether or not you would be more comfortable visiting a specific gender. Some moms just feel more comfortable with a female pediatrician than with a male. This is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

- Interview your potential pediatrician. It’s important that you and your pediatrician have the same views on important childcare issues such as breastfeeding, immunizations, and the use of antibiotics. For example, if you would like to bottle feed, make sure you visit a doctor who supports that choice.

- Check your insurance. Before you get too far into the process, make sure the doctors you are looking at are covered under your insurance. Some insurance carriers will only cover costs associated with doctors in their network.

- Rely on your instincts. Even if a doctor is a perfectly competent medical doctor, you may not feel like he or she is a good fit or you may not feel a rapport with him or her. If this is the case, keep looking. The perfect pediatrician is out there!

When choosing a practitioner for you and your newborn baby, more and more women are considering certified nurse midwifes to help them through the labor and delivery process. Midwifes have been around for centuries, but are they right for you? Here are some tips for helping you decide whether to opt for a midwife or an ob-gyn.

- Your medical condition. This is perhaps the most important factor. If you had a difficult time getting pregnant, have a history of miscarriages, or have medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, you are considered a high risk pregnancy. Any complications that arise would result in you being transferred to the care of an ob-gyn, so it’s best to choose an ob-gyn if you are high risk or have certain conditions.

- The atmosphere for delivery. If you want to deliver your baby at home, or you prefer to receive prenatal care at home or a birth center rather than a doctor’s office , you may want to consider a midwife instead of an ob-gyn. Keep in mind, however, that a midwife cannot offer an epidural, so a midwife is best for natural deliveries.

- Your personal needs. Some women prefer a more individualized and personal approach to the birthing process. Many expectant mothers opt for midwives for this very reason. Many also offer emotional support as part of their services and are always available for questions and concerns.

- Your views on monitoring. If you have your baby in a hospital under the care of an obstetrician, your baby will be monitored to ensure he or she is healthy, breathing correctly, and feeding properly. Midwives rely less on monitoring.

Regardless of whether you choose a midwife or an ob-gyn, make sure you find someone you are comfortable with and who can provide you with the care and guidance you expect during your delivery.

If you’re expecting your first child soon, the responsibility can be overwhelming. Many new moms are afraid that their inexperience will somehow harm their baby. The good news is that most moms learn through trial and error how to care for their baby and the kids usually turn out healthy and happy.

There are a few of the things you can expect regarding the basic needs of your new baby:

- Lots of feedings. In the first month, newborn babies breast or bottle feed an average of 8 to 12 times throughout the day and night. Babies who formula feed tend to eat a little more, as formula keeps them fuller longer. You’ll start to get a feel for when your baby is hungry very quickly.

- Lots of sleeping. Most moms will tell you that in the first few months, it seems like all their baby does is sleep and eat. Newborns will usually sleep at least 16 hours a day, and sometimes more. Make sure you provide a safe sleeping area for your baby, and always put your infant on his back to minimize the chance of SIDS.

- Lots of cleaning up. In the first few months, you’ll go through lots of diapers. Keep enough diapers, wipes, and diaper rash ointment on hand. You will also need to bathe your newborn baby. In the beginning, a sponge bath with a washcloth and warm water is fine. Once you start to bathe your baby, make sure you always test the temperature to make sure it’s lukewarm and not too hot. Use a soap specifically designed for babies and their sensitive skin, as other cleansers or bar soaps can dry a baby’s skin.

Taking care of a newborn baby takes practice, but once you know the baby’s basic needs, you’ll catch on very quickly.

Throughout the first year of his or her life, your baby will visit the doctor more frequently than usual. These checkups are important and help ensure the baby is developing and progressing at a proper pace.

Most experts recommend the following schedule for check-ups during the first year:

- One month. At your baby’s one month check-up, your pediatrician will weigh your baby and tell you what height and weight percentile she is in. If he feels your baby is underweight, he may suggest a different feeding schedule. He or she will also determine if your baby is reacting properly to her surroundings and check muscle development.

- Two months. Again, your doctor will check the baby’s weight and make sure she is progressing at a healthy and normal level, particularly with muscle development. Your pediatrician may want to know whether your baby can hold her head up or push up.

- Four months. At this point, the doctor will focus more on your baby’s muscle development, which should include better control over her muscle control. He will also want to know the type of routine your baby is in and discuss any concerns you may have.

- Six months. At this check-up, if your baby still isn’t sleeping through the night, you may want to bring it up with your doctor. By now, your baby should be sleeping through the night without having to eat.

- Nine months. At nine months, your doctor will probably discuss your baby’s new mobility as she is probably learning to crawl, stand, and scoot. He will also want to ensure your provide a safe environment.

- Twelve months. When you baby is a year old, your doctor will make sure the baby is progressing normally and learning new skills. It’s a good time to bring up any concerns as well.
