Tips for New Parents

An infant

The experience of new parents after having a first child is often a rough one. While these individuals love and adore their children, the adjustment to little or no sleep at night, increased noise levels, and constant messes may be difficult for some. Before the baby comes, there are a few tips to remember in order to make the process a bit easier.

The first tip is for parents to remember to take care of themselves. While a baby does demand a lot of attention and care, a sick parent is going to be little help to the child. Making sure to rotate shifts of care between both parents, so that the mother is able to get some sleep will be helpful. New moms may also find themselves grabbing snacks during feedings or while the baby is asleep, but good nutrition is crucial for nursing mothers.

Another smart idea is to accept assistance from friends and family members. Those who are skilled in baby care may offer guidance that new parents may not understand. New moms often feel very protective of their children and skills as a parent, but accepting help is not the same as admitting defeat. Taking time for personal hobbies and to spend with a spouse is also important to remain sane. New parents should remember that a little time apart from the child may be more beneficial in the long run, although it may be difficult to leave the baby initially.

Spending time together as a family is important. New parents are making the adjustment to infant care, and taking time to enjoy it is a great way to bond.

When is the Right Time to Switch to Formula?

Breastfeeding offers benefits for both mother ...

Image via Wikipedia

Breastfeeding is a beautiful act that helps to nourish your baby with what you created with your own body and helps to bring you and your baby closer together. However, there may come a time when breastfeeding isn’t practical. How do you decide when it’s the right time to switch to formula?

  1. When your child becomes dependent on you and you have decided that the breastfeeding has become a crutch. If your baby reaches to breastfeed in an effort to be comforted – before he goes to sleep, when he wakes up or when he’s upset in any way, that’s an indication that your baby may be using breastfeeding not just for nourishment, but also for comfort.
  2. Breastfeeding becomes an inconvenience that negatively affects your life. This inconvenience or negativity can take many forms, depending on each mother and child’s personal situation – from fatigue or illness or embarrassment or even time constraints. It’s also the reason to switch to formula feeding that seems to garner the most negative attention from mothers who feel guilt over putting themselves over the perceived health or happiness of your child. However, keep in mind that your child is going to have a hard time being happy if you’re not and it’s hard enough with a new baby without added stresses.
  3. Your child has expressed interest in a bottle or cup. Some mommies want to extend the closeness they feel when they breastfeed their baby, so they ignore the signs that their child is ready to grow up. While you can certainly pump milk to provide, don’t be scared to make the switch to formula.

Is Your Child Ready for Their Own Place?

There comes a time in every parent’s life when his or her children grow up and move out on their own. This bittersweet experience is full of emotions. Parents have spent so many years raising their children and teaching them right from wrong that many parents want to help their children with this important and costly milestone. Of course, you need to be confident that your children are ready for their own place and the responsibilities of paying rent, HOA management fees, or a mortgage. The following tips will help you decide if your children are ready for their own place.

Financially Stable

The most important factor to consider, when thinking about your child’s readiness to move out, is his or her financial situation. Your child must be financially stable with a good job and steady income. Your child should also have a savings account, ideally with enough money to cover three months’ worth of living expenses for emergencies.

Mature, Responsible, and Independent

Your child must demonstrate that he or she is mature enough to move out. He or she must be responsible enough to pay the bills on time, especially utility bills and credit card bills.  Also, your child must contact a reputable HOA management company to help them when starting the process. Independence also plays a role because children must be independent enough to handle living on their own. If an emergency arises, will your child know what to do, other than call you?

When your child shows all of these signs of readiness, it’s a good indication that he or she is ready to move out.

Hospital Banning Video Cameras During Childbirth

It’s a time-honored tradition: a father captures his baby’s first moments on film as the mother gives birth to a precious new life. Birthing videos often become cherished keepsakes, passed down for generations. Years later, the adult who was once that baby can literally watch their very first breath being taken. Birth is an amazing, awe-inspiring event, perhaps the most important time in a couple’s entire life.

For all of these reasons and more, it is upsetting news that many hospitals are now banning video cameras in birthing suites. Why? Because they create evidence available to present to a court should that birth involve malpractice. Hospitals are so worried that people will record them making careless mistakes at the cost of you and your baby that they are banning birthing video recordings.

Should the threat of increasing video camera bans in birthing suites keep you from using your own birthing video as evidence in court if you have captured medical malpractice on film? Absolutely not. You can’t put a price on the safety of your life, or your baby’s. Focus on your specific hospital and location when selecting a lawyer. If you live in Los Angeles, see what injury attorneys in los angeles have to offer.

Whether to ban birthing videos and other recording devices in the birthing suite or not is currently the choice of each individual hospital. Rather than trying to hide any mistakes that might be made, hospitals should be focusing on not making any mistakes — and until they pay attention, those who have suffered due to negligence can and should demand compensation for their carelessness with patients’ safety.

Safety measures for the newborn

There are lots of things that are extremely essential to keep the newborns absolutely safe and secured. Mothers always do take care of their babies but for those mothers, who are yet to overcome their weaknesses, either allow the close relatives or hire nurses to take care of their babies. Whoever is handling a baby must realize that babies require some extra care and the special touch that can make them comfortable in this world which is very new to them.

The first and foremost fact is that one must get the best crib or cradle for her baby that must be solid and smooth. It is necessary to check whether the cribs have any sharp edges or points, before buying one. One must always consult a doctor or follow the prescription while feeding the newborn. It is better to feed the newborns mainly with the liquid foods in a little portion at a time, so that the foods do not get chocked. While getting the baby a bath always use baby bathing elements like baby soaps, washes and shampoos or oils. Check the ingredients present in these bathing elements and make sure that they are absolutely safe for the baby. Any kind of electrical appliances must be kept at a safe distance during the bath.

Newborns must be kept in a temperature that will suit them. You can always ask the child specialists about various safety measures and all the procedures of handling a newborn. It is necessary to keep the household absolutely hygienic. There must be someone always available for the baby as the newborns must not be kept alone.

Good Reasons to Refinance Your Car Loan

Many people don’t realize that they have the option to refinance their car loan as a way to save money. When you become pregnant it is often a good time to take a look at your finances and look for ways to cut down on your bills.

There are a quite a few reasons why you might want to consider refinancing your car loan in order to save money:

  • You have a high interest loan. If you bought your car at a time when your credit was not very good you may have had to get a high interest loan in order to buy the car. This is one of the best reasons to refinance the loan and reduce the rate.
  • You’re in an upside down loan. If you owe more for your car than what it is worth you may be able to correct this by refinancing. It is important to look at this situation carefully though before refinancing.
  • You need to reduce your monthly payment. Babies cost money and every little bit can help. A car refinance may help you to make ends meet while you are planning for the baby to come and after he arrives.
  • Your loan is through the dealership. Car dealerships can give you great deals on a car, but they don’t necessarily get you good deals on your interest rate. If you bought the car and had it financed through the dealership there is a very good chance you can lower your interest rate by refinancing the loan.

Swaddle Me, Baby!

Swaddling (How to)

Image via Wikipedia

The ancient art of swaddling has made a huge comeback. Pediatricians recommend it and new parent’s everywhere are raving about it.  Why? First and foremost, swaddling soothes and calms the new baby, allowing her to get to sleep.  And second, it helps new parents get some needed sleep as well.   Ideally, prospective parents should practice before their baby arrives.  Practicing on an inanimate object, such as a doll or a teddy bear, helps new parents build the skill without the stress of a squirming, crying child.

Advantages of Swaddling

  • Increases feelings of calm and relaxation in the baby.
  • Regulates the baby’s temperature.
  • Smoothes the baby’s adjustment from the womb to the real world.
  • Creates a secure and comfortable environment for the baby.

The Technique

The swaddling technique is simple.  You’ll need a square cotton blanket and a baby (or a baby substitute.)

1.     Lay blanket on a flat surface.

2.     Fold down one corner. (About 4 to 6 inches)

3.     Place the baby on the blanket with the baby’s head on the fold.

4.     Take the right side of the blanket and pull it over the baby. Tuck it under the baby’s back, just beneath her left arm.

5.     Now take the left side of the blanket and pull it over the baby, tucking it under the baby’s back beneath her right arm.

Plain cotton receiving blankets work just fine for swaddling.  However, there are a number of swaddling blankets on the market, that do all of the work for you.  Either way,  swaddling is just what your new baby needs!

Upgrading the Vehicle to Accommodate New Family Members

New parents have a lot to consider in this life-changing event. Not only will their priorities change, but they will also have a lot of tangible changes to make. When a couple is first married, they often don’t have a lot of extra money, so the family car is simply one that will get them from point A to point B. The size, fuel economy, safety, and condition of the car are often not huge factors in deciding which car to purchase. However, when a new baby enters the family, the size of the car suddenly matters a lot more. Fitting a bulky car seat comfortably into the backseat is step one and many hospitals won’t even allow parents to take the child home unless they see the seat, safely strapped into the car.

When couples are looking for a way to make money to purchase a larger car or pay higher rent, they may be thinking, “How can I sell my car fast“? This is a big step in becoming selfless parents, since they are putting the needs of their new baby first, and making sure it has everything it will need to live comfortably and safely.

Some new couples also elect to live in studio or one-bedroom apartments in the first years of their lives together, in order to save money and enjoy spending time together. But bringing a baby into such a cramped space can cause frustration among parents, and thus cause the baby to feel the tense atmosphere. Initially, many new parents like the baby to sleep in their bedroom for the first few months, but as the child grows, he or she will need space to crawl and walk around.   Also, room is needed to put the new furniture, such as a crib, changing table, and other essentials. A larger apartment or home can help alleviate the stress, since the child can sleep in its own room and give the parents some space to themselves.

Having a Baby and Paying for It

Having a baby is an exciting time in a couple’s life. Many couples join together in the hopes that someday they may start a family of their own together. There is something special about being able to open your hearts to a child, but with every child comes the responsibility to care for them as well. That can put quite a strain on the family finances.

If you are thinking about bringing a child into the world, you should be prepared for the cost of caring for a baby. First you need to ensure that you are able to care for the baby and his or her day-to-day financial needs. This means that you have to be freeing up the most money possible, so start by seeing what your available income is each month.

You want to factor in money for savings and all other fixed expenses. Fixed expenses are expenses that you currently pay each month, and they do not vary much. Once you compare that to your income, you should have a clearer picture of where you are at in regards to caring for the baby.

Of course, then you have to consider how to reduce those monthly expenses so you have the money free for your child. The first place is to try car refinancing. This option is a great way to reduce the monthly payments and even reduce the months you’ll have to pay for it.

If you have done that and are looking for additional savings, cutting back on your phone or cable bill is an easy place to start. Many people have unlimited cell phone use, but they pay far more for it when they don’t really need it. The same can be said of the cable bill. Cutting back on these expenses could be a healthy way to start building for your family. Having a baby is worth every penny you’ll spend caring for it.

Pregnant? Make Your Wedding Day a Beautiful Success!

Today, a beautiful and pregnant bride is not unusual.

Once engagement rings have been exchanged, the wedding day becomes supreme. Because the wedding day is such an important event for the bride, if she is also pregnant, specific items must be handled well to guarantee this day can be as perfect as possible.

The most important area to consider is the date; this will affect all other decisions. Whether the bride is in her first trimester or her last decides everything from dress to shoes to honeymoon.

So Number One: select your date carefully.

Number Two: the bridal dress.

Once you have selected your date, then it will be easier to plan for a beautiful bridal gown. The empire waistline is always in fashion and recently has made an even bigger comeback, making this choice a winner. The style is beautiful and also convenient for the bride as it should fit her well and look stunning, no matter when the wedding date is set.

Whatever style is decided, it is best to stick to the KISS principle as exaggerated ruffles, lace, etc. will also exaggerate an increase in the waistline. Whether buying off-the-rack or having your dress specially made, make sure that it will be comfortable AND beautiful when the great day actually arrives.

Number Three, one that most do not consider: the bridal shoes.

Even if the bride is not pregnant, this choice is usually based on beauty, not comfort. Realize that you will be standing most of the time. Make sure that comfort also goes with beauty. You might consider two pairs of shoes, one for the wedding and one for the reception.

Number Four: the honeymoon. If the bride is in her last trimester, a trip to the Bahamas may have to wait.

Be aware that carefully planning can make or break your special day. So plan carefully for a incredible experience. And, above all, enjoy!
